Abstract

Reactions of TaCl5 with aromatic acids have been found to yield the chlorocarboxylates [TaCl4(O(2)CR)](2) (R = Ph, p-FC6H4, p-ClC6H4 (1); o-CH3C6H4 and 2,6-Cl2C6H3). With NbCl5 mixtures were obtained and only reaction with C6F5CO2H yielded the pure chlorocarboxylate [NbCl4(O(2)CR)](2) (2). Crystal structure analysis of 1 evinced a tantalum dimer containing two syn-syn bridging carboxylate groups; a similar bonding arrangement was also found in the analogous niobium derivative 2.
