Abstract

A new, practical and stereoselective route to 5-[H-2]-D-glucose is described starting from 1,2,5,6-O-isopropylidene-alpha-D-glucose. 5-[H-2]-D-Glucose is produced exclusively with no evidence for the C5 epimer which has accompanied other synthetic methods. The strategy could be extended to include stereoselective tritiation at C5 of glucose for bioorganic studies.
