Abstract
There is no single answer to the need for environmentally responsible food packaging. The design of an optimum solution in any particular case should be based upon a quantitative appraisal of product life cycle, and should consider the basic options of 'reduce', 'reuse', 'recycle' and 'recover'. Progress continues in reducing the environmental impact of plastics packaging for food products, and is illustrated here by the specific case of polypropylene-based snack food packaging.
