Abstract

Homogeneous xerogel powders in the BaO-Al2O3-SiO2 and BaO-ZnO-Al2O3-SiO2 systems were prepared by chemical polymerisation in a sol-gel process. Their sintering behaviour and crystallisation characteristics have been investigated as a function of temperature, time, and composition. The BAS system requires a sintering temperature of 900-960-degrees-C and the BZAS system 840-900-degrees-C to achieve reasonable densities-up to 97%. The BAS system produced hexagonal BAS2 and BS2 phases on devitrification. The BZAS system gave celsian and hexagonal BAS2 and the presence of ZnO facilitated the formation of celsian.
