Abstract

Gels were prepared from tetraethylorthosilicate (or tetramethylorthosilicate), aluminium sec-butoxide, barium acetate, and zinc acetate and converted to 'amorphous' oxide powders through an appropriate drying and heat treatment. The effect of various factors such as solvent, composition, chelating agent, and reflux conditions on the synthesis and character of the gels were studied. The physical and chemical reactions occurring during heat treatment were followed by differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetric analysis.
