Abstract
The properties of two space-frequency functions, the ambiguity function and the Wigner distribution, have been compared with a view to determining their suitability for machine tool monitoring. It has been demonstrated that the Wigner distribution is the better function to detect incipient chatter and to classify freak surface characteristics. Some practical results and simulations verify this.
