Abstract

There are several hundred third world charities in Britain. They exist in various shapes and sizes, and display a wide range of professional interests and concerns. Collectively they raise well over 200 million Pounds from voluntary sources each year in support of relief and development work in the developing countries. This article is thc first in a two part examination of the prospects facing third world charity in the final years of this century. It argues that the organisations will need to adapt to changes in the social and political environment in Britain, as well as changes overseas, while at the same time determine their own agendas in the face of rising expectations and increasingly disparate demands.
