This paper attempts to build an understanding of technology management as a totality. The contention is that this necessitates linking the process of managing technological change with the environment in which it occurs. The paper therefore explores: the connection between business strategy and technology management; the need to appreciate technology in terms of products, production processes and people; and highlights the 'complementary assets' required. It points out the opportunities as well as the pitfalls in the process of managing technological changes, and synthesizes work from a range of approaches. One example of technology management is considered from the automobile industry.
