Abstract

A survey is presented of the principles underlying the design of model interface microstructures which have the required micromechanical response and thermal or environmental stability within fibre-reinforced ceramic matrix composites.

Microstructural and compositional characterisation of interfaces, based on electron imaging and spectroscopic techniques, are reviewed with illustrative examples of interfaces formed by in-situ reaction during fabrication or by fibre precoating.
