Fabrication of thick films of both YBCO and BISCCO superconductor on zirconia and alumina substrates is described. Their suitability for application is assessed in terms of electrical and physical properties. It was found that, for both materials, the choice of substrate played a critical role in fabrication due to chemical interaction. The best results for both materials were obtained when using a 3% yttria stablised zirconia substrate. Microstructural aspects of both materials are discussed.
