The high intensity photolysis (360 nm > lambda-irr > 310 nm) of aqueous [W(CN)8]3- ions leads to products not formed under normal intensities, i.e. [W(VI)O(CN)6]2- ions and a previously reported, highly coloured species (lambda-max = 537 nm) (denoted as P-537) which could not be isolated. A detailed quantum yield study reveals that the new photochemical channel is characterized by an I2 dependence (I is the intensity of absorbed light), i.e. it is a two-quantum process and involves an absorbing intermediate state giving access to a high energy state. It is also found that the same high energy channel is reached when lambda-irr < 230 nm, reaching a quantum yield of about 0.1 at 200 nm.
