Abstract

Data on the price of houses for which the Nationwide Anglia Building Society approved mortgages in 1985 is aggregated to Great Britain's 280 Local Labour Market Areas. A wide range of mean house price is found both between and within regions. The extent to which these patterns are related to local labour market conditions is examined by reference to an Index of Local Economic Performance and its component variables. The wide scope for further research and the challenges which it will encounter are then outlined.
