Abstract
This work of tremendous breadth and analytical power investigates a range of sites and cultural forms that constituted popular history, including material objects, fiction and non-fiction, paintings, and illustrations. It focuses on the portrayal of the French Revolution in the early and mid-Victorian periods and in the first half of the twentieth century, and on the representation of Tudor England from the early nineteenth century into the 1950s. The book builds on an extensive, wide-ranging literature and an impressive quantity of research into archival and printed primary sources, as well as on oral and written personal testimonies that the author solicited.
