Abstract

We describe a resonance measurement technique using wideband ultrasonic signals applied to a two layer system of a thin coating on a substrate of known properties. The model we describe predicts the resonant behaviour of these systems and we explain how this approach is used to measure coating thickness and elastic modulus. Non-contact Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers are used for ultrasonic generation and detection as they do not significantly modify the resonant response of the system, when compared to other transducers.
