Abstract
Nb-93 solid-state NMR has been used to probe the Nb environment in the (PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3)(1-x)-(PbTiO3)(x)(PMN PT) solid solution of samples with x=0, 0.04, 0.1, 0.2, 0.25, 0.3, 0.33, 0.37, 0.4. The results are found to be consistent with a model for the local structure of PMN in which Nb-containing beta" layers and mixed Nb/Mg-containing beta" layers alternate along the < 111 > directions. In PMN PT, it is found that the variation with x of the intensities of the components of the Nb-93 magic-angle spinning NMR spectra suggest a model in which exclusively Nb-containing beta"-type layers are preserved up to x=0.25 with Ti being accommodated only in the mixed Or layers, which thus become mixed Nb/Mg/Ti layers. It is shown that at x > 0.25, this local structural arrangement is no longer tenable and that Ti is required to enter the beta" layers, thus marking a "phase change" or "boundary" in the local structure. Macroscopically, this corresponds to the position of the phase-X to rhombohedral transformation in the phase diagram for the PMN PT system.
