Abstract
Acceleration of the rate of cooling during injection moulding of a tube like component has been investigated using gas flow and gas temperature as variants. A new type of needle capable of operation at cryogenic temperatures was designed and used in the work. Cavity melt temperature was recorded at different locations in the specimens and used to compare gas assisted injection at ambient temperature with gas assist at cryogenic temperatures. Subsequently, gas flow was introduced at various rates and assessed. The system was validated finally over a typical injection mould production session.
