Abstract
The annealing of stacking-fault tetrahedra has been studied in bulk specimens of quenched gold. The results are interpreted in terms of a model involving the successive emission of vacancies, by the propagation of shear jog-lines, and a value of the energy of a shear jog-line of 0cdot07 ev atom plane is obtained. The results indicate that the activation energy for the annealing of stacking-fault tetrahedra is edge length dependent. The greater thermal stability of stacking-fault tetrahedra in silver than in gold is explained by the lower stacking-fault energy of silver.
