Abstract
A technique of microabsorption spectroscopy is described which enables the intrinsic optical absorption of small regions of a thin single crystal to be measured at low temperatures. A comparison of the absorption spectrum of an evaporated film of PbI2 with the microabsorption spectrum of a single crystal demonstrates the value of the technique; other applications are illustrated by absorption measurements on the exciton spectrum of perfect and irradiated crystals of PbI2.
