Abstract

Histories of adult–child relations, however schematically conceptualized some
of them may be, are always welcome. The ongoing so-called ‘crisis’ of childhood –
poverty, mental health, schooling, ‘anti-social’ behaviour, consumerism – referenced by
the continual denigration, and so often exploitation, of children, especially those of the
poor, by the media and others, says much about both the ambivalence of our attitudes
to children and the extent of ageist prejudice against young people. Amid such adultism,
and lacking a political movement, appealing to the past for context and perspective is perhaps
one of the best chances children (and adolescents) have of achieving any kind of justice.
At least historians are now beginning to grasp the importance of ‘age’ as a category of
analysis (Hendrick, in press) – although, on its own, this is no guarantee of a fair hearing. [...]
