Abstract
The accounts of the confessional strife unleashed during the French Wars of Religion reveal much of the attitudes of the protagonists in the conflict at both a national and a local level. However, an assessment of the reaction of the population in general to the troubles is far more elusive, due to the usual silence of our sources on the opinions held by those other than the instigators and the victims of religious violence.
