Abstract
Purpose - To study how companies originate strategic alliance portfolios, termed 'high-performing portfolios', that enhance the companies' flexibility and operational performance.
Design/methodology/approach - A review of the literature of high-performing portfolios is presented, focusing particularly on several research strands, including the performance of the individual ties that comprise portfolios. Reports the results of an inductive, multiple-case study of the US wireless gaming industry focusing on entrepreneurial game publishers since their portfolios could be tracked from their birth and so avoid 'left censoring' of data. Reports the results of analysing data for six rival companies, chosen from a population of 12 publishers, derived from a wide range of sources, including extensive archives, interviews with leading experts, attendance at multiple industry conferences, repeated semi-structured interviews with executives of the focal and partner companies, and informal follow-ups with e-mails.
Findings - The results indicated that there is a tendency for executives to originate high-performing portfolios when they simultaneously form ties with multiple partners and when their portfolio visualization takes place in the context of the entire industry as opposed to a series of single ties. Concludes that the theoretical framework emerging from the study emphasizes agency and strategic action rather than dyadic interdependence and social embeddedness as a deterministic feature of their management thinking.
Originality/value - Contributes to inter-organizational network theory and the study of strategy within entrepreneurial companies.
