Abstract

Climate change could potentially impact the weed species communities found in the UK arable landscape and their ecosystem functions. A new three year project is introduced that will combine detailed mechanistic models of weed germination, competition and seedbank dynamics with a regional stochastic weather generator. The integrated model will be used to quantify the relative impact of climate change scenarios on different stages of the weed life cycle. Of particular interest is the relative importance of environmental and management drivers of weed community assembly which will determine the potential for mitigation. A novel aspect of the project will be to study weed community assembly using the concept of trait space. The simulation model will be used to identify combinations of eco-physiological traits that are viable under current and future conditions to predict the risk to native weed species and potential for invasive species to establish in the UK.
