Abstract
In this chapter we consider the causes of mouth odor, the nature and causes of the gum disease, periodontitis, the extraordinary diversity of the mouth microflora, and how perturbation of its complex ecosystem affects these problems. We suggest areas which merit intensive research at the time of writing, including the use of mouth VOCs in the diagnosis of systemic disease, and present ideas for the control of halitosis and periodontitis.
