Abstract

The skin microflora, glandular secretions by the skin, and transformations of anthropogenic precursors into odorous compounds by bacteria are described. The role of these in normal and pathological conditions and the concept that individuals have a unique characteristic odor are discussed. The role of methylotrophic bacteria in the breakdown of organosulfur compounds in the foot as a habitat is considered, and the gaps in our understanding of the significance of odor formation and its control are identified.
