Abstract
The paper titled 'Safety in numbers: Why your inter-organisational relationships matter if you want to be resilient in uncertain times' examines the notion of ‘joined-up security’ in the face of extreme threats and events in order to focus upon the regulatory environment within the context of England and Wales produced by the Civil Contingencies Act (2004) and the challenges for business continuity management produced by organisational inter-dependencies. Limited empirical research has been conducted to date about how extreme events constitute ‘wicked’ problems which require a ‘joined-up’ response between not only the public and private sector but between systems of private sector organisations or corporate communities. It is argued that the risk of extreme events such as severe flooding, pandemic disease or terrorist attacks pose challenges not just for Government but across business networks and infrastructure organisations and critically that a gap exists between the rhetoric and reality of joint working in this area. The full paper and presentation will explore the impact of the threat and actuality of extreme events upon a sample of inter-connected private and public sector organisations.
