Abstract
This paper explores the limits of accountability standards (e.g., SA 8000, the Global Reporting Initiative, and the UN Global Compact) by looking at these initiatives through the lens of Jacques Derrida‟s philosophy (i.e. deconstruction). After a brief introduction into Derrida‟s philosophical work and some general remarks on the nature of accountability standards, we uncover the unavoidable aporias that are associated with standard development as well as implementation and thus discuss what can, and most of all
what cannot, be reasonably expected from compliance. We critically analyze two exemplary initiatives (i.e. SA 8000 and the UN Global Compact) to demonstrate that (a) attempts to standardize corporate accountability can only be successful insofar as we recognize that compliance cannot be achieved without modification of the rules underlying the standard and (b) that standard implementation cannot exclusively rest on the „business case‟ without
diminishing accountability in the first place. We conclude with some implications of our analysis and prospects for further research.
