Abstract

Slender structural forms have become common in contemporary design of footbridges. These structures are normally occupied and dynamically excited by humans. Their slenderness in combination with human activities such as walking, jumping and running often leads to excessive structural vibrations. As this increased slenderness is a trend which is likely to remain in footbridge design, it is necessary to develop a reliable and efficient means for vibration serviceability assessment of footbridges. Responding to this challenge, the Vibration Engineering Section at the University of Sheffield, UK has developed an in-house MATLAB based and GUI driven suite of programmes called VSATs (Vibration Serviceability Assessment Tools) for vibration serviceability assessment of slender structures excited by humans. VSATs is a research and consultancy tool consisting of a number of modules specific for vibration serviceability assessment of floor structures, footbridges and grandstands. A module devoted to vibration assessment of footbridges consists of: 1) modelling of human-induced load and pedestrian arrival time in probabilistic sense, 2) reliable estimate of vibration response of structure having an arbitrary level of complexity, 3) statistical processing of calculated responses and 4) vibration serviceability assessment based on a number of criteria defined in British and international standards. This paper demonstrates the vibration serviceability assessment of a real-life box-girder footbridge according to the procedures mentioned.
