Abstract
Broncho-alveolar lavage has an important role in the clinical investigation of mechanically ventilated patients presenting with diffuse infiltrates including patients with Acute Lung Injury(ALI)/Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) [1]. The procedure facilitates direct
sampling of the alveolar space for cytological and microbiological examination. In addition to providing clinically valuable information, broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL) studies have provided important insights into the pathophysiology of the early and later phases of ALI/ARDS. Although bronchoscopy is usually well tolerated in critically ill patients with ALI or ARDS, acute changes in haemodynamic status, deterioration in oxygenation, alterations to lung compliance and even cardiac arrest have been reported.
