Abstract
Over the last decade there have been enormous changes in the landscape of urgent care services. Patient and Public Involvement in these services is, however, often
misunderstood and therefore neglected. The term ‘urgent
care’ includes services such as NHS Direct, NHS walk-in
centres, intermediate care services, out-of-hours provision, minor injuries units and case
managers for those with longterm conditions. Urgent care
service providers increasingly include for-profit, not-for-profit and social enterprise providers – all now contribute directly or indirectly to urgent care provision.
