Abstract
Background – Revalidation for UK doctors is to be introduced in April 2012. The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), on behalf of the General Medical Council (GMC), is responsible for proposing the standards and methods for the revalidation of general practitioners (GPs) guided by the 12 attributes of the GMC Good Medical Practice. This College has proposed that the revalidation process for GPs build on appraisal with GPs presenting supporting information of patient-centred clinical practice and areas of extended practice in a revalidation ePortfolio at ‘strengthened medical appraisal’, which will then be submitted annually as part of a five-yearly cycle. This evidence will be supplemented with supporting information from other local sources including clinical governance data.
