Abstract

Results from meta-analyses suggest that the prevalence of depression is higher in people with type 2 diabetes compared to those without. However a number of methodological limitations in the literature remain including the use of inadequate control groups and a failure to control for potentially confounding factors. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of screen detected and prevalent (currently managed) depression in a multiethnic primary care population with and without type 2 diabetes in the UK. In addition the study aimed to examine ethnic differences in the prevalence of depression between South Asian (SA) and White European(WE) people with type 2 diabetes and to assess the recognition of depression in primary care.
