Abstract
While a growing body of literature deals with W. G. Sebald's use of photography, this article focuses on his treatment of fine art in his prose writings, arguing that Sebald makes an epistemologically as well as aesthetically significant distinction between photography and fine art that deserves closer analysis. Whereas the photographs tend to explore the relationship between history and trauma by inviting an investigation of their representational status, works of fine art in Sebald's prose often provide a therapeutic haven of contemplation, a counterpoint that enshrines moments of transcendence. The argument is developed with reference to Sebald's important essay on the painter Jan Peter Tripp and his treatment of masterpieces in "Schwindel." "Gefühle.," "Die Ausgewanderten," "Die Ringe des Saturn," and "Austerlitz."
