Abstract

A combined ultrasound and thermography system has been developed for identifying surface breaking defects using a raster scanned, Q-switched, pulsed Nd:YAG laser as both a thermal and an ultrasonic source. As the thermal spot approaches a defect, the lateral flow of heat in the substrate surface is disturbed, altering the spot shape. Ultrasound waves are also disturbed; by measuring the change in signal strength and frequency distribution of the received waveform, information regarding the position and depth of the crack can be obtained. Modelling of the interaction between Lamb waves and defects has been compared with experimental data.
