Abstract
Following a discussion of the ambiguities of the language of religious education, the chapter argues that learning about religious diversity at some depth should be part of the education of all young people, whether studying in a religious context or not. The paper argues that European policy development, notably in the Council of Europe and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe, and European research concerning religious education, have made a positive contribution to discussion about the rationale for the study of religions in public education, establishing networks of communication for exchanging ideas on pedagogy and policy and for further collaborative research.
