Abstract
A fairly senior official once told me that he didn’t mind the environment. He didn’t have anything against the environment particularly; he just wasn’t very interested in it. My reply that the environment included what he was standing in, what he ate and what he breathed, just elicited a blank look. To him, and many others, the environment is something ‘out there’, a factor in the way that, for example, sewage pollution is something out there, which might be killing fishes and causing a problem, but usually to somebody else and not him.
