Abstract
rave-reliefs 590 and 594 from the archaeological museum on Delos depict images of sailors
flailing in the water, desperately trying to reach their ships from where they have fallen. The
images depict the final moments of the lives the steles now commemorate, perhaps even the
moment of death itself. Within the context of the range of imagery usually presented on Greek and
Roman grave markers and sarcophagi, these images are very unusual. In the Greek world the most
