Abstract
Purpose - Investigates whether personality moderates the relationship between employee intentions to quit their job and actual turnover.
Design/methodology/approach - Outlines the weak relationship between employees stated intentions to quite their job and actual turnover; explores whether personality moderates the relationship and seeks to identify which individuals are more likely to exhibit consistency between intentions and behaviour. Drawing on a number of relevant studies, presents a number of hypotheses that were then tested on data from questionnaire surveys involving two samples: (1) 296 employees working at an entertainment and gaming corporation in the USA; (2) 281 employees of a large US bank.
Findings - Reveals how self-monitoring and risk aversion affected the translation of intentions into quitting; puts forward how locus of control did in one sample, but not significantly in the other; highlights how the relationship between intentions and behaviour was found to be stronger for low self-monitors than for high self-monitors.
Research limitations/implications - Address, among other things, the role of locus of control in the turnover process; examine turnover adopting a more fine-grained analysis of the reasons underlying employee quits.
Originality/value - Identifies a number of dispositional traits that influence those who turn intention into quitting into leaving their jobs.
