Abstract
Purpose: To explore the opportunities for increasing customer responsiveness through the alignment of demand creation and fulfilment.
Design/methodology/approach: Reviews previous studies of buying behaviour as a driver of supply chain strategy as an introduction to an examination of six supply chains in the electronics, process industries and third-party logistics sectors, aimed at explaining evidence in support of a market-driven approach to supply chain strategy in practice.
Findings: Identifies two categories of supply chain strategy: market-led supply chain strategy and enablers/inhibitors. Discusses each category in detail, expanding on three key enablers/inhibitors to the process: management of the supply chain; alignment; and performance measurement.
Research limitations/implications: Has no stated implications for future research.
Originality/value: Addresses the struggle of aligning demand creation and fulfilment when the functional nature of organizations acts as a barrier to aligning supply chains effectively with the markets they serve.
