Abstract
This Special Issue of Neuropharmacology on Glutamate Receptor-Dependent Synaptic Plasticity is dedicated to Professor Graham Collingridge FRS, Editor in Chief of Neuropharmacology from 1993 to 2010. Under Graham's stewardship the journal went from strength to strength, attracting high quality original articles and authoritative reviews, whilst at the same time publishing influential nomenclature guidelines and comprehensive Special Issues on topical subjects. This has culminated in Neuropharmacology's current Impact Factor of 4.8 (from around 2 in the early 90s) and occupying a prime position amongst the top 20% of Neuroscience journals and top 10% of Pharmacology/Pharmacy journals. In addition, Graham had the foresight to introduce the annual Neuropharmacology Conference, which is now in its 23rd year, and which serves as a showcase for popular themes regularly represented in the pages of the journal.
The Special Issue also coincides with the 30th anniversary of Graham's seminal discovery in 1983 of the N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-dependence of long-term potentiation (LTP), a widely studied process believed to be the cellular substrate of some forms of learning and memory. LTP had been described a decade earlier by Tim Bliss, Terje Lomo and Tony Gardner-Medwin (see the eloquent commentary by Tim Bliss in this Special Issue), but it was the demonstration of the involvement of a tangible molecular entity – the glutamate NMDA receptor – that provided great impetus to the field and was quickly followed by equally seminal observations by others such as the calcium-dependence of LTP, the calcium permeability of the NMDA receptor, its voltage-dependent block by magnesium ions, and its involvement in spatial learning – observations that have propelled the field ever since.
