Abstract
The literature on atomistic-to-continuum coupling methods (hereafter referred to as
a/c methods) contains a wide variety of different formulations. This article focuses on
the most important concepts and challenges for the transition from nonlocal discrete
atomistic models to local continuous models of crystalline solids and on the typical2
approximation errors committed in these various approaches, with the quasicontinuum
method chosen to give a uniform presentation of the issues.
