Abstract
The finite element method (FEM)-based computational approach combined with linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) theory allows to predict the qualitative fatigue-crack-growth curves for layered composite specimen as a function of loading cycles number. The results of fatigue crack growth problem involving computational contact with friction between cracked surfaces shows that crack growth is strongly friction-dependent. Hence, the number of loading cycles to failure increases along with increasing friction coefficient. Computational studies should include local (crack-tip) material nonlinearity as well as large deformations of the composite specimen, which are especially important in the last fatigue cycles. The probabilistic analysis of fatigue crack growth can be performed using the stochastic second-order perturbation methodology or using the Latin hypercube sampling version of the Monte Carlo simulation in the system ANSYS.
