Abstract

Investigates geographic variations of attitude shifts toward eradication of female genital mutilation (FGM) and a wide range of potential correlates toward the continuation of FGM, using the 2014 Department for International Development (DFID) Sudan Household Health Survey data. Despite FGM’s human rights violations, an estimated 125 million women and girls in recent years have undergone FGM in 29 countries in Africa and the Middle East. The overall percentage of people with a positive attitude toward the perpetuation of FGM fell from 27.5 percent in 2012/13 to 18.3 percent in 2014. South Darfur constituted a high prevalence area in 2014, though areas historically associated with FGM in the North now appear less likely to support the practice. Significant factors that may explain differences in FGM attitudes between Sudanese states include educational level, income, size of family, trust in tribal and local leaders, tribal identity, and state of residence; ethnicity and religion remain widely cited reasons for the continuation of FGM.
