Abstract
Although it might appear to be an uncontentious term, the idea of ‘work’ has long been debated. Should ‘work’ primarily be thought of as something done for pay, hence separate and distinct from other aspects of life? That view has been strongly contested by feminists, who have argued that unpaid domestic work and caring are necessary to human reproduction and should also be treated as ‘work’ (Glucksmann, 1995; Sevenhuijsen, 2002). More generally, others have argued that contemporary transformations in the world of paid employment are increasingly blurring the boundaries between work and non-work. Consumerism and the growth of services mean that an increasing proportion of the population is engaged in flexible working and have nonstandard work hours.
