Abstract
This paper reports some of the findings from a study of actual and potential "women returners" (ie women returning to paid employment after a break for child-birth and child-rearing) in two contrasting wards - Benwell and South Gosforth - in Newcastle upon Tyne. The study was recently commissioned by the Northern Operational Office of the Training Agency. The main focus of attention is a comparison of the characteristics, current circumstances, labour market attitudes and aspirations of samples of women with young children drawn from each of the two wards.
