Abstract
This paper explores the classic dramatic tension that exists between, on the one side, a person’s prima facie obligation to obey posited law, and, on the other side, a person’s obligation to respect extra-legal norms, whether established by reference to ‘gods’ (which term is taken to include transcendental value systems of a non-religious nature, such as ‘respect for human rights’) or by reference to the immanent values of
the social ‘group’, which I refer to by the shorthand ‘being Greek’.
