Abstract
Volunteers are integral to successful events (Elstad, 2003; Slaughter, 2002), without whom festival costs would increase exponentially (Holmes & Smith, 2009). They are temporary resources, bringing with them a variety of experiences and knowledge (Barron & Rihova, 2011), and form one layer of a complex festival resourcing profile. However, volunteers are far more than just a cheap resource, they have a positive impact on customer services, and over the long term contribute to competitive advantage (Holmes & Smith, 2009), which is particularly important in a sector that is becoming more homogeneous, or ‘isomorphic’ (Frumkin & Gelaskiewicz, 2004). Therefore, volunteers can play a critical role in festivals differentiating themselves over rivals.
