Abstract

As disturbing as it is to acknowledge, the medical community agree that some infants die suddenly for reasons that cannot be explained. When a death cannot be attributed to a known cause, it is often attributed to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The medical community accepts, however, that in infants under a year old, it can be impossible to draw a distinction between death from smothering and death from unknown natural causes and so the term SIDS may include some deaths that were caused by an intentional, albeit undetected, act.
