Abstract
This paper re-visits the nature of business excellence, explores the conceptual development and suggests a normative framework that better supports the supply chain innovation and the delivery of competitive performance. It stresses the importance of the firm-specific and situation-sensitive means of evaluation and the embedded nature of driving business innovation. A high-level measurement criterion – unique voice as the resultant behaviour of supply chain innovation has been defined specifically in the proposed excellence model World Class Diamond model. The theoretically hypothesised independence of this innovation measure has been statistically tested using chi-squared goodness of fit test based on the assessment data from 162 companies internationally. The major implication in theory has been a general framework that arguably for the first time sets up a generic high-level measure for supply chain innovation and hard-wired its connection with the measures of operational excellence, strategic fit and capability to adapt. Practical managerial implications have also been explored with empirical evidence from a mini-case that demonstrates the applicability and the potential business benefits.
