Abstract

In many industrialised nations, women who are identified as at risk for fetal Down's syndrome or other chromo-somal abnormalities, by a combination of epidemiological risk factors (eg, age or family history) and test results (eg, serum screening), are counselled and offered fetal karyo-typing. Fetal karyotyping is an invasive diagnostic test based on culture and examination of fetal cells obtained by amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling. The technique helps parents to make informed choices about the course of the pregnancy, but does carry an increased risk of fetal loss.
