Abstract
Preterm birth is a major cause of perinatal mortality, infant morbidity and childhood disability in most developed nations [1]. The incidence of preterm birth has remained stubbornly high in recent years, averaging approximately 7% of live births in the United Kingdom [2], with little evidence of any decline [1]. The adverse sequelae of preterm birth during the neonatal period and beyond impose a considerable burden on finite health care resources. This raises a number of economic questions for decision-makers and budgetary and service planners.
